Total turnover of domestic payment cards amounted to 111 b.kr., in December 2021, an increase of 16.9% from the year before. Total turnover of debit cards was 52.1 b.kr and of credit cards was 59 b.kr. Average turnover per day was 3.6 b.kr., an increase of 7.8% between months.

Domestic turnover of payment cards in Icelandic retail outlets in December 2021 amounted to 91.6 b.kr., a 11.6 b.kr. increase from last month. The turnover comprised of a 44.7 b.kr. debit card turnover and a 46.8 b.kr. turnover of credit cards. Turnover of payment cards in retail outlets abroad amounted to 16.8 b.kr., an decrease of 715 m.kr. from the previous month and a 7.8 b.kr. increase between years.

Total turnover of foreign payment cards in Iceland in December 2021 amounted to 9.2 b.kr., an decrease of 1.5 b.kr. from the month before and an increase of 7.5 b.kr. compared to the same month the year before.

Total domestic turnover of payment cards in retail outlets in the year 2021 was 922.2 b.kr. a 7% real increase from the previous year. Total turnover of foreign payment cards in retail outlets was 125.2 b.kr. in the year 2021 a increase of 64.4 b.kr. from the year 2020.


Payment intermediation data is based on information from Icelandic credit card companies. Please note that turnover of domestic debit cards in banks and ATMs and turnover of credit cards per. billing period is excluded from Sept. 2020 onwards.
