Revised data collection and methodology for market securities

The publication on market securities shows the size and development of listed securities across the main categories. In October 2026, the data collection and methodology underlying the publication were revised. The main changes involve new data sources, a revised scope of the securities included in the publication, and more consistent treatment of bonds and bills.

The changes apply to all components of the publication, apart from collective investment fund shares, and the data were recalculated from October 2023 onwards. Prior to the change, data for listed equities, debt securities of non-financial companies, municipal bonds and foreign debt securities were obtained from the Iceland Stock Exchange (Nasdaq OMX Iceland). Data for Treasury instruments were obtained from Government Debt Management, while other data were based on monthly balance sheet reports of deposit money banks, other financial corporations, the Housing Financing Fund and collective investment funds. From October 2023 onwards, data on securities, apart from collective investment fund shares, are based on information from Nasdaq CSD and Iceland Securities Depository. Data on collective investment fund shares continue to be based on monthly balance sheet reports of collective investment funds.

The coverage of data from the Iceland Stock Exchange and securities depositories is not fully comparable. Data from the Iceland Stock Exchange include the total issuance of dual-listed securities admitted to trading in Iceland, whether they are held with an Icelandic or a foreign securities depository. Data from the domestic securities depositories, on the other hand, cover securities held or registered with the relevant depository, irrespective of whether they were issued in Iceland or abroad. From October 2023 onwards, all bonds and bills are reported net of the issuer’s own holdings, whereas previously this applied only to Treasury securities. In addition, indexed Treasury securities were previously reported excluding accrued interest and indexation compensation but are now reported including both.

Changes between September and October 2023 reflect changes in data collection and methodology as well as actual changes in the issuance and value of securities.
